Eastbown and UP - Sports TV with a Plotline

With the new season of Eastbound and Down vastly approaching, I thought it would be appropriate to write an article about greatest Sports TV shows on today.

EB & D takes what some can say is a pure genre, sports, and corrupts the hell out of it. It’s like the freak love child of Judd Apatow, THE WHITE SHADOW (Classic show based around an inner city high school basketball team), and MAJOR LEAGUE. It contains one of the brashest characters on TV whose rants rival those of AdamCarolla. Danny McBride’s character is an egotistical redneck who at one point was the David Price of baseball; a stud pitcher who had all the potential in the world to be a Hall of Famer.  After letting the hype eat away at his work ethic, he had to become a substitute gym teacher and, because of this, walks an emotional line that sways between arrogant and humbled. If you are looking to laugh your ass off, I highly recommend it. It has probably one of the best opening episodes of any show created.

Here are the top 5 Sports shows on NOW

This high school drama takes an approachable view to a non-approachable situation. Texas football defines a community like an NFL team defines a city but the pressure forced upon these mere teens is borderline assault. The best part about this program, though, is how they develop these intricate, amazingly well-drawn characters. This aspect of the show rivals any other on TV. You do not need to be a sports lover to watch this one.

This documentary about the NFL training camp gives fans an insider view of what used to be a locked world. It unveils what’s behind the curtain and takes you deeper into the NFL lifestyle. Because of this show, fans feel even closer to the professional football players they spend all day Sunday worshiping. It’s a genius marketing strategy. We will be seeing this trend continue in every sports realm.

This comedy delves into the hobby of every true sports fan, Fantasy Teams. It’s about a few guys who in a Fantasy Football league, each of whose sole purpose is to gain the edge over each other and reign supreme in the league. With special appearances from Pro Sports athletes, this show is going all out. The only issue is that some of the characters are a little extreme and really not relatable, even to a diehard fantasy sports fanatic like myself.

This miniseries is truly groundbreaking.  30 for 30 is a series of documentaries directed by a mixture of well-known and relatively unknown directors about sports related stories. Emotionally gripping, provocative, and informative, the stories include a bio of Len Bias, the history of The Baltimore Colts marching band, Holmes vs. Ali, and the U in its heyday. It spans the sporting world from 79’ to 2009 and ranges between all sports. The directors include such big names as Peter Berg, Barry Levinson, Spike Jonze, Jeff Tremaine, Ice Cube, and several others. These documentaries are some of the most emotional, gripping sports documentaries ever created.
