Brothers Livin' the Hard Chargin' Life As They Should

Any of you following this blog knows by now it's written by two brothers living active lives in the two biggest cities in America. Between Kyle's domination of NYC he enters triathlons, goes on hiking trips, checks out every metropolitan area concert and show, and just recently he summitted Mt. Rainier. I live in Hollywood, work in Beverly Hills, and go on regular SoCal surfs and in fact in the last 3 months caught waves in Big Island, explored Hawaiian jungle, and launched regular hikes to the tallest points in the city and county of Los Angeles, in the region of Southern California, and now Mt. Rainier. What I've learned from all this is that not only is an active life a far superior one than that I used to live (you know, work Monday through Friday, spend the weekend alternating between hammered and asleep with plenty of TV and movies in between) but that by constantly doing stuff you get stronger and more energized without having to crowd in with a bunch of sweaty dudes in lycra and fat chicks walking on treadmills at the local 24 Hour Fitness (though yes, I'll admit, for most of us, including myself, time with the weights, machines, and so on is necessary with time at a premium). And from my recent experience in Rainier I've been reminded of how much I miss my brother. Now if you put that all together, the ideal life would be one in which my bro and I vacillate between myriad epic adventures, constant activity the likes of which not only leaves one mentally more at peace but physically turns a man into a hard specimen of muscle and tissue superior to sole gym rats whose muscles, without regular cross-training and out-of-gym workouts, mostly transfer to little more than flexing on the beach and occasionally filling out a bouncer's uniform.

As such I have a special place in my heart for such web-series as BROTHERS ON THE RUN and this ridiculous doc below about pro surfer Ian Walsh's hard-charging, big-wave-surfing younger bros and their life of endless diversion on Maui.

Watch as they go from wave to trail to MMA to parties, never once stopping to check in on the newest episode of KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS or lamenting the fact that they missed the most recent TRUE BLOOD. And feel a tinge of jealousy when DK explains that they've never been in a gym - their cross-training is just that, engaging in other activities that are not only interesting and fun but also train them into athletic beasts as their main pursuit, big wave charging, dictates.

And go out and do some cross-training of your own this weekend. Surf, hike, climb, bike, get into MMA, anything that not only makes you stronger but makes you better, happier, so on.

Happy Friday.

- Ryan
