This weekend's sports recap: Uppers, Downers, Inners, Outers

What a weekend in the world of sports. If you are a fan of intense events that personify the competitiveness of overgrown freak specimens, then all you need to do is watch a reply of a few games this weekend. That said, spoiler alert, if you are reading this to gain insight into Penn State then stop reading now. We are all aware of the biggest story of the week and possibly of the year, but I honestly do not want to be just another grouping of words that get thrown in the stream of the media. Now that Joe Pa is resigning, we will touch upon this soon.

So going into the weekend, the college game of the century was to take place. LUS vs. Alabama. The Definitive 1 vs. 2. Two teams that are heads and shoulders above the rest of college football and pending on a few loses, might even vie for the BIG DANCE. They both have defenses that rival the greats. Now, if you were not invested in this game emotionally or financially, then you were bored as shit, but it did go into OT, with a game winning field goal. LSU-9, Bama-6.

There were also a few of the standard college upsets that seem to place almost every weekend. Due to a missed field goal by Arizona State, UCLA upset them. An even bigger upset took place between Louisville and WV. Louisville is on a hot streak and took down the in-breeders from West Virginia. Louisville came out hot and played well enough to hang on to the W.

Now God’s Sunday also had its fair shares of ups-and-downs. The Giants felt like commemorating their epic Super Bowl victory over the untouchable Patriots from a few years ago, by emulating it almost to perfection. After the stripper banging Gronkowski caught a touchdown with 1:36 left in the game to take a 20-17 lead, Mr. Shucks Eli decided to put the team on his shoulders and led them to a 24-20 victory with 15 second left. I’ll be honest, after the Pats scored, I left to go to Sidebar (The greatest Ravens Bar in NYC) to partake in my pregame time ritual of throwing down pitchers before the Jameson strikes.

The Chargers added some a glimpse of hope with push that almost took down of the NFL bullies this year, the Packers. The chargers were desperate for a win and they put up a valiant effort, but Aaron Rodgers just proved too much for them. After the Packers took a 21-7 lead at the end of the first corner, thanks to Philip “Mr. 2011-2012 underachiever award” Rivers and his two pick sixes, the Chargers fought back to within a touchdown with 6:25 left on the clock. After that though, both teams stalled, and the Packers remained blemish free for the season.

This weekend also contained the “Ugly Bowl”, which is allocated to the game of the season when two absolutely dismal teams come together to play a game of hot potato. The Cardinals beat the lowly Rams in OT off of a kick return. Although this was a game full of crap, I can safely say that winning in this fashion is an anomaly. Look out for this kick returner Patrick Peterson as he is a stud.

Then there was what many consider to be the biggest rivalry in Sports. The Ravens vs. the Steelers. Not only did this game have early playoff implications, but it was a battle of which team is the best in the entire AFC. Usually, these games are decided by 3 points and this game was no different. Another hard fought battle that entailed Ray Lewis almost ripping off Hines Ward’s head. After the Steelers scored with about 5:00 minutes left, the thought was that once again Big Ben would get the advantage over the Ravens. With the Raven’s D, holding the Steelers, the game was on the line for one of the most criticized players in the NFL. With a little over 2 minutes, Flacco decided to decimate the tough Steelers defense by converting on several 3rd downs and even one 4th down that led to a 26 yard TD pass to Torrey Smith. Unreal.

Finally, on Monday night, Michael “I kill bears too” Vick, could not keep Jay cutler’s Bears at bay. Chicago ended up coming back on a Philadelphia dying to win a game. Their losses continue to expand the hole that is the Giant’s lead.

This was a week to remember. Parity continues to increase in the NFL and on any Sunday, you never know what the hell will happen. That’s why the bookies still reign supreme.
