SUD of the Week: Hey Mitt, Republicans Nowadays Are Poorer and Smarter Than Ever

Mitt Romney went into February the obvious frontrunner of the Republican Party. He had a nice square jaw and JERSEY SHORE spray tan. A golden smile. Experience running a successful business, no doubt that could be applied to our struggling country. He’d run a campaign before and new how to get it done. And hell, the bastard just seems presidential, especially against little gremlin-with-a-lizard-name Newt, Old Man Integrity Ron Paul, and admitted bigot/evolution denier Rick Santorum.

He had one blip, a few moments of stupidity in the SC debates which delivered a win to Newt.  And then there was the sound-bite that Romney likes being able to fire people, yeah that didn’t help but still. He’s just talking about accountability. Capitalism. The American way. President Obama has ruined this country, Romney would prove it. He’d even convinced people to look away from the fact that when Obama picked up this country it was like a whore ravaged with leprosy and all the pain he’s inflicted on it has often just been the treatment necessary to get rid of the disease (though at times, like any doctor, he's misdiagnosed shit). Romney had convinced them to look away from the Occupy Wall Streeters, from the facts that the economy is actually turning around, jobs are increasing, and that the 1% have been getting away with financial murder for the last decade.

With 40% of the New Hampshire vote, 46% of the Florida vote, he was a runaway Mormon missile, ready to lead the disgraced and disjointed Republican Party against the black infiltrator from the left.

But news started trickling out that he’d paid only 14% taxes on his $42 million in earnings the last 2 years. Essentially he paid as great a percentage of his taxes as a person who made $8500 last year, disproving the highly-regarded Republican belief that wealthy folks pay astronomical rates. That got people thinking, who is this bastard who goes around stomping about saving the middle class when he makes money in the upper end of the upper class but pays the tax rate of the lowest tax bracket. Even with all his singing O BEAUTIFUL and professing his love of Freedom people had to blink. I mean really?

Then he made another wonderful mistalk – he said he’s not “concerned about the very poor people.” Now the whole statement actually ended with “because there are safety nets in place for them.” But even then, he’s still showing his colors. He’s so out of touch with America that he doesn’t realize that a good portion of us consider ourselves “very poor”, especially compared to a man who averaged ~$400,000 a week for the last 2 years. He still pulled off a win in Nevada, with 50% but that was it. The Republicans realized that even given his social conservatism and preaching of fiscal responsibility, one glaring fact remains – he’s not one of us.

He raves about the middle class without stopping to think that the middle class is disappearing. While he’s pulling in money hand over fist, people who used to believe in the American dream are struggling to support their families, reeling over homelessness, and humping their bodies across town trying to find a job because they’ve fallen through society’s safety nets. So here's the deal - it took a day or two but the Republican party quickly zoomed in and realized that in questioning the safety nets, he makes it look like we don't have a strong enough system in place for taking care of the poor. On the other side, it could also be taken as a statement that the current systems of Welfare, Medicaid, Obamacare, all these horrible social programs actually serve a purpose. So in one statement he's alienated the poor, the bleeding-hearts-for-the-poor, the ATLAS SHRUGGED-praising-Tea Partiers, and the religio-conservative "We take good enough care of the poor right now" folks. Newt compared him to Obama's proliferation of the "entitled generation", of course not wanting to point out that those systems were in place long before either of them, they were actually put in by celebrated American hero FDR.

Oh, and even Rush questioned him as well.

Well Mitt, between your inability to keep your mouth shut about money and the fact that, leading into a campaign you paid a lower tax ratio than the average minimum-wager, you’ve painted yourself into a corner. All that leaves you that aligns you with the current average Republican American is religious conservatism and, wait, you’re MORMON. Santorum, on the other side, is a “gays are child molesters and cavemen lived alongside dinosaurs” Christian.

Yeah, Mitt, your Seemingly Unimportant Decision is the fact that you're not even TRYING to appear to be one with the proletariat but when you do, you stumble all over yourself to try and fix your gaffes by fucking with Republican belief systems. You shoulda paid more taxes or found a way to prove tax-based services are unnecessary; or you could've made a Buffett-esque stink about how little you did pay; and of course, in the modern "depression" you should've stayed away from whether you care about the rich, the poor, or everybody else. Because Santorum has swept the last 3 primaries, Missouri at 55%, Minnesota at 45%, and conservative super-state Colorado at 40%.

Well at least you have tens of millions of dollars to fall back on. Don’t worry, nobody will feel sorry for you when you lose.
