Visions of London:Olympic Events You Know Nothing About, Week 4 (Taking The Actual Plunge Edition)

FOURTH, DIVING
Diving is one of those sports where you can say safely say, you do not recognize a single name. It is just on the cusp of making it to an Olympic sport that receives some attention. Watching individuals flip and spin is fun, but seriously, it’s diving. For the record, China and their miniature swarm of Olympic trained athletes dominate this event. There are 8 separate events in this discipline between male and female springboard, synchronized springboard, platform, and synchronized platform. From your view (as well as mine), it all looks the fucking same. Maybe a few less rotations, a lower splash and smoother entrance into the pool, but each movement remains similar to the untrained viewer.

This irrelevant sport was created by Gymnasts in Germany and Sweden in the 18th century and to this day and it is still not a big deal, but either way, it could be fun to watch for no other reason than national pride. Pending on the event, the divers are judges on level of execution, how synchronized the team is, and the degree of difficulty. That said, what really grass my attention, is the fact they can control their body in mid-air. Ok so watching 1 person do this is alright, but watching two individuals do these complicated moves in unison is mesmerizing. I can safely say that whenever I cliff jump (NOT DIVE MIND YOU), I start a rotation and then basically hope for the best. I’m not sure why I’m not in the Olympics.
Either way, this is a sport that is dominated by the Chinese as they grab children from schools and train them early. They swept the FINA Diving World Cup and took home gold in all 8 events. I’m assuming they do not have rules regarding child abuse. Since they have the best training program in the world, it is only natural that the best diver comes from their country. He goes by the name of Airborn Bo.

BO Qiu- The favorite in the 10m platform has the difficulty and style that is so consistent with the Chinese team. He was able to move flawlessly on his way to a the FINA gold. In 2011, he was the FINA diver of the year and right now is in prime shape to dominate. Personally, while he is good, I would like to see him execute the Triple Lindy. Move over, Bo Qiu, Thornton Melon is the real diving legend. Not only was he able to perform such a daring feat, he was able to do it without any recent training and a true man gut. If anyone deserves gold, it is Thornton Melon.
