Record Heat: Time to Snowboard

Record heat is melting this country. Still think global warming is a lie, you crazy bastards? Then I hope the next round of blackouts targets your damn house.

Out here in L.A. we're faring better than most but we're also soft - temperature fluctuations, even slight ones with low humidity, ruin us. As such, our high-80's with 50% humidity has been hard to handle. But growing up in Baltimore I've learned a trick or two about how to handle the cold.

1. Eat lots of ice-based products. Snoasis on Greenspring Valley in my old hood comes to mind but you can at least get those frozen otter pops at your local supermarket.
2. Bodies of water. If you live by the ocean or a lake, problem solved. If not, try to find a neighborhood pool - bonus points if you know an apartment or hotel pool you can poach on the reg. If none of these apply, fill up a fuckin' kiddie pool. Best way to beat the heat, sitting in the yard, sipping a mint julep in a plastic kiddie pool.
3. Think cold. Think back to times when you were drenched in ice water, think of winter storms. Which leads to
4. Watch movies about cold places. For you action sports freaks, that specifically targets skiing and snowboarding vids.

So here's the kicker - you can actually beat the heat by going snowboarding skiing or snowboarding in the summer. If you have a deep bankroll head to Las Lenas Argentina, Portillo Chile or New Zealand. If you have a medium bankroll, head to Mt. Hood, Mt. Rainier, or any glacier in BC. If you're broke, then the best you're gonna be able to do is go with the kiddie pool and fill it with ice.

So anyway, yeah, here's a sick little flick shot at Blackcomb/Whistler (where they held the last Olympics - so cooolllllllllllllllllghhh) on the Blackcomb glacier in BC. Thing about glacier riding is it's not really a big mountain powder and huckfest. But it's snowboarding and if you got a little park rat in you, glacier riding is the best way in the world to beat the summer heat. And if you're an armchair park rat, this video's the best way to beat the heat. Directed by Eddie Gram with an all-star cast of shredders, cool hipster M83 meets the Police tunes and bankrolled by Burton, K2, Monster, a bunch of the coolest rich snowboarding sponsors, as well as the local snow camp, it's a great way to fantasize about life where you don't stick to the vinyl furniture on the porch. And maybe it'll inspire you to eschew that hot-az-ballz trip to the local watering hole for a little voyage to a glacier.Because that's what it's all about, experiencing something different. And seriously, there's nothing more ambitious than saying "fuck you" the a murderous heatwave.

Enjoy and Happy Thursday.
